Trauma Therapy in Newton Mearns & Online

Welcome to our dedicated Trauma Therapy service. Our professional therapists offer a compassionate, confidential space to help you permanently resolve the negative emotional effects of past traumatic incidents. Join us in person at our Newton Mearns practice or connect UK-wide via secure video call or phone.

What is Trauma Therapy?

Trauma Therapy is available at our Newton Mearns practice and online. It is a specialist service that combines traditional Talking Therapy with advanced techniques such as Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR).

Within our Talking Therapy framework, we use a variety of therapeutic approaches tailored to your individual needs. At the core of our practice is a Person-Centred approach. This is essential for ensuring you feel safe, heard, not judged, and understood. By building this foundation of trust, we create the right environment for you to explore your experiences at your own pace.

Every client is unique, and our therapists select modalities based on your individual needs. Where appropriate, we may use Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR). This is a brief, one-to-one, non-hypnotic, person-centred, simple and structured method for permanently eliminating the negative effects of past traumas. We may also include CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) techniques, which can be a useful additional support tool for managing daily thought patterns and anxiety.

How can Trauma Therapy help?

Trauma Therapy is highly effective in eliminating the emotional “charge” of past incidents. Every person experiences trauma differently, and our therapists adapt their approach to your unique needs. This support is especially useful if you are experiencing symptoms often associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), such as:

Reliving the event: Experiencing intrusive thoughts, vivid flashbacks, or recurring nightmares that make the past feel present.

  • Hyper vigilance: Feeling constantly “on edge,” being easily startled, or having difficulty sleeping and concentrating.
  • Emotional distress: Feeling “flooded” by intense anxiety or confusing emotions, such as sudden anger, deep sadness, or irrational guilt.
  • Avoidance: Finding yourself going out of your way to avoid certain people, places, or activities that remind you of the trauma.
  • Physical reactions: Noticing physical symptoms like a racing heart, sweating, or trembling when faced with triggers.

Feeling “stuck”: Living with a persistent sense that you are unable to move forward or “get past” a specific event.

What is the Connection Between Trauma and Phobias?

It is common for unresolved trauma to manifest as a specific fear. For example, a traumatic experience in childhood can lead to a debilitating fear of heights or social situations in adulthood.

If your trauma has resulted in a specific phobia, we can integrate your sessions with our specialist Exposure Therapy and Phobia Therapy. This ensures we are not only treating the symptoms of the fear but also processing the traumatic event that originally sparked the reaction.

Where is Trauma Therapy available?

We offer four flexible ways to access support, ensuring you can find the format that best suits your lifestyle, availability, and comfort level:

In-Person Sessions: We welcome you to our comfortable, private therapy room in Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire (G77). This location is conveniently situated for those across the Southside of Glasgow and surrounding areas.

Online Video: For maximum flexibility, we provide secure video sessions UK-wide. This allows you to receive specialist support from the privacy of your own home or another convenient location.

Phone Therapy: A great option for those who prefer a non-visual approach or are experiencing screen fatigue, also available UK-wide.

Home Visits: If you find it difficult to travel, have childcare commitments, or simply feel more at ease in your own environment, we can often bring the therapy to you. Please note these are subject to availability and location; contact us for a personalised quote.

Choosing between these formats allows you to prioritise what works best for you, whether that is the physical presence of a therapy room or the convenience of fitting a session around a busy schedule.

FAQS

Common Trauma Therapy FAQs

What is the process for starting Trauma Therapy (including a free consultation call)?

Our process is designed to ensure our specialist support is the right fit for your unique needs before you commit to a full session:

  • Initial Enquiry: You begin by sending us an enquiry via email or our contact form, including a brief summary of how you are hoping Trauma Therapy can help you.
  • Availability Check: We will email you with details of our current ongoing availability to determine if we can establish a mutually suitable, regular session time. We will also advise you if we believe our specialist service is not the right fit for your particular situation, and where possible, we will provide recommendations for alternative services that may better suit your needs.
  • Free Consultation Call: If we confirm that we have a suitable ongoing slot and our service is a potential fit, we will then arrange a free, confidential consultation call. This is a vital part of the assessment, allowing you to explore your needs, ask any questions, and help you decide, without any pressure or obligation, if our approach is suitable for you.

First Appointment: If we both feel that our service is the right fit and can provide the specialist support you need, we will book your first paid appointment. It is completely natural to feel nervous, so this session is mainly about settling in. We will discuss your current situation, what brings you to therapy now, and what you hope to achieve. It’s a collaborative space where we start building the trust necessary for our work together.

Sessions are usually scheduled weekly to fortnightly, to begin with, as consistent attendance is crucial for creating momentum and implementing changes. The frequency may reduce over time as you process your experiences and find stability.

The duration of therapy is highly individual and depends entirely on the complexity of the issues and your specific goals. While some people gain significant clarity in a fixed, short-term block (e.g. 3 to 4 sessions), others require longer-term work to address deeper, long-standing patterns. We will regularly review your progress to ensure the pace feels right for you.

Our fees reflect our specialist level of training and extensive experience. Fees are payable either electronically two working days in advance of your session or in cash on the day of your session.

We provide neuro-affirming support that moves away from ‘fixing’ and towards understanding. Whether you have a formal diagnosis or are self-identified, we adapt our communication and environment to suit your sensory and cognitive needs. This includes professional ADHD and AUTISM screenings (if you wish) and neuro-affirming sessions that focus on your specific cognitive strengths. We focus on the particular ways you may experience and process trauma . This might include how ADHD or Autism impacts the way you navigate sensory triggers or how you communicate your internal experience of past events. We don’t believe in a ‘one size fits all’ approach. We work with how your brain actually works.

Yes. For many, the physical and hormonal changes of menopause can trigger or heighten the symptoms of past trauma. We provide a space to explore these overlapping experiences, acknowledging that the transition of menopause is a significant life event. For more focused support on this transition, we also offer specialist Menopause Therapy.

We offer a range of evidence-based therapeutic modalities, ensuring that your sessions are tailored to your unique experience of trauma. While some clients benefit from a single approach, we often use an integrative style to provide the most effective support:

  • Integrative Therapy: By drawing on multiple models, our practitioners can adapt their approach to suit your specific personality and the particular nature of the trauma.
  • Person Centred Therapy: This is an active, relational therapy providing deep empathy and a judgement-free space, specifically designed to help you process difficult experiences and feel safe.
  • Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR): A simple and structured method used where appropriate to permanently eliminate the negative emotional impact of specific traumatic incidents.
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Techniques: While pure CBT is not typically used for Trauma Therapy alone, specific CBT techniques can be highly effective for managing the anxiety, difficult thought patterns, or irrational guilt that can often accompany trauma.
  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction: We offer these techniques to help you manage the heightened physical and emotional stressors that often accompany the recovery from trauma.
  • Specialist Clinical Areas: We also provide focused support for more complex needs, including:
    • Trauma Therapy for those experiencing traumatic Bereavement.

Exposure Therapy and Phobia Therapy: When unresolved trauma manifests as a specific fear or phobia, we can integrate these specialist techniques to help you process the original event and overcome the resulting fear.
