What is Weight Loss Psychotherapy & Nutritional Therapy?

Weight Loss Psychotherapy & Nutritional Therapy is available at our Newton Mearns practice and online. Traditional dieting often fails because it ignores the root cause of the issue. Our specialist service identifies the specific reasons why you, as an individual, find weight loss difficult.

Weight management is complex. Some people struggle with overeating. Others face emotional blocks or physiological imbalances. Our model combines professional Talking Therapy with Nutritional Therapy. This dual approach explores your emotional relationship with food. We also use nutritional analysis to uncover any physical barriers. These may include mineral deficiencies, low stomach acid, or unstable blood sugar. We provide the scientific insight and emotional support needed to change your perspective on health.

How can Weight Loss Psychotherapy & Nutritional Therapy help?

This therapeutic model helps you regain control and build a positive relationship with your body. We work together to identify the specific factors that make weight loss a challenge for you. Our approach is effective for a wide range of experiences, including:

  • Emotional Eating: Using food as a primary tool to manage difficult feelings. This may include stress, sadness, boredom, or feelings of loneliness.
  • Cycles of Bingeing: Feeling out of control during eating episodes. We provide a space to explore the complex feelings of guilt, shame, or frustration that often follow.
  • Subconscious Barriers: Addressing the hidden reasons why you may find it difficult to prioritise your own well-being or follow a nutritional plan.
  • Chronic Dieting Fatigue: Breaking the exhausting cycle of losing and regaining weight to achieve a more stable, healthy balance.
  • Physiological Obstacles: Identifying when internal factors, such as blood sugar instability or compromised digestion, are hindering your progress.
  • Nutritional Imbalances: Using nutritional analysis to determine if specific deficiencies are preventing you from reaching your health goals.
  • Low Self-Esteem: Supporting you to work through difficult thought patterns so you can feel safe and comfortable in your own skin.

How is Weight Loss Psychotherapy & Nutritional Therapy different from traditional dieting?

Most weight loss plans are temporary. They often focus on short-term restriction. This usually leads to people returning to their old ways of doing things once the “diet” ends. Our approach is different because it is a lifestyle change.

We help you build healthy habits that become second nature. This is not something you do for a while; it is a way of living that you naturally do forever. By addressing the psychological and physical reasons for your weight, we help you create a sustainable shift. This ensures your progress is permanent rather than a temporary fix.

FAQS

Common Weight Loss Psychotherapy & Nutritional Therapy FAQs

What is the process for starting Weight Loss Psychotherapy & Nutritional Therapy (including a free consultation call)?

Our process is designed to ensure our specialist support is the right fit for your unique needs before you commit to a full session:

  • Initial Enquiry: You begin by sending us an enquiry via email or our contact form, including a brief summary of how you are hoping Weight Loss Psychotherapy & Nutritional Therapy can help you.
  • Availability Check: We will email you with details of our current ongoing availability to determine if we can establish a mutually suitable, regular session time. We will also advise you if we believe our specialist service is not the right fit for your particular situation, and where possible, we will provide recommendations for alternative services that may better suit your needs.
  • Free Consultation Call: If we confirm that we have a suitable ongoing slot and our service is a potential fit, we will then arrange a free, confidential consultation call. This is a vital part of the assessment, allowing you to explore your needs, ask any questions, and help you decide, without any pressure or obligation, if our approach is suitable for you.

First Appointment: If we both feel that our service is the right fit and can provide the specialist support you need, we will book your first paid appointment. It is completely natural to feel nervous, so this session is mainly about settling in. We will discuss your current situation, what brings you to therapy now, and what you hope to achieve. It’s a collaborative space where we start building the trust necessary for our work together.

Sessions are usually scheduled weekly to fortnightly, to begin with, as consistent attendance is crucial for creating momentum and implementing changes. The frequency may reduce over time as you establish sustainable habits, reach your health goals, and achieve a deeper psychological understanding of your relationship with food.

The duration of therapy is highly individual and depends entirely on the complexity of the issues and your specific goals. While some people gain significant clarity in a fixed, short-term block (e.g. 3 to 4 sessions), others require longer-term work to address deeper, long-standing patterns. We will regularly review your progress to ensure the pace feels right for you.

Our fee reflects our specialist level of training and extensive experience. It also includes (specific) between-session nutritional communication. Fees are payable either electronically two working days in advance of your session or in cash on the day of your session.

Yes. We provide neuro-affirming support that moves away from ‘fixing’ and towards understanding. Whether you have a formal diagnosis or are self-identified, we adapt our communication and environment to suit your sensory and cognitive needs. This includes professional ADHD and AUTISM screenings (if you wish) and neuro-affirming sessions that focus on your specific cognitive strengths. We focus on the particular ways you may experience and process food and nutrition. This might include how ADHD or Autism impacts the way you navigate executive functioning in meal planning, or how you internally process the emotional and sensory aspects of hunger and fullness. We don’t believe in a ‘one size fits all’ approach. We work with how your brain actually works.

Yes. Hormonal changes during menopause can significantly impact weight and metabolic health. This transition can also be an intensely emotional time, often bringing feelings of anxiety, loss of identity, or frustration. We provide a safe space to explore these emotional changes and the physical impact on your body. We can also integrate our specialist Menopause Therapy where appropriate.

We offer a range of evidence-based therapeutic modalities, ensuring that your sessions are tailored to your unique experience of how your weight impacts your mental and physical health. We use an integrative style to provide the most effective support:

  • Nutritional Therapy:  We use scientific analysis to identify physiological barriers. This includes looking at mineral levels and digestive health. This offers nutritional insights to help you manage your physical well-being to achieve sustained weight loss.
  • Integrative Therapy: By drawing on multiple models, our practitioners can adapt their approach to suit your specific personality and the particular nature of the barriers you are facing.
  • Person Centred Therapy: This is an active, relational therapy providing deep empathy and a judgement-free space, specifically designed to help you explore your relationship with food at your own pace.
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Techniques: While pure CBT is not typically used for Weight Loss Psychotherapy, specific CBT techniques can be highly effective for managing the anxiety, difficult thought patterns, or guilt that can often accompany difficulties with eating.
  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction: We often integrate this as a tool to help you manage the emotional triggers and stress that impact your well-being.

Specialist Clinical Areas: We provide focused support for more complex needs. This includes Trauma Therapy for those whose eating patterns are linked to past traumatic experiences, and support for those experiencing chronic stress.
